After a family has adopted an ocicat kitten (or two), we like to ask for an update on how our kittens have settled into their new home.

We are very pleased to have received these and many other e-mails and phone calls.

E-mail from Carol, Victoria

Hi Sue
I have attached some photos of Talbot and Fletcher for you.  I will try to get some of Talbot posing for you, but that will take some effort, because he never stays still.
Rob built him a lovely outdoor pussy palace with 3 levels, to allow him to have some fresh air and because it is on wheels, we are able to put the palace into the dog run and they can be together, but Talbot is still safe outside.  Talbot teases the dog by poking at him through the mesh and then running to the top level, meowing at him.  Quite amusing to sit and watch them interact.

Hi Sue

I thought I would give you an update on how Mali is settling in!

We’ve had her for almost 4 weeks now and her personality shines through more and more every day!  She will be sitting on Damien’s lap when I get home and as soon as she sees me she runs straight to my feet!  She loves nothing more than curling up on the couch with us.  In the mornings she will usually sit on the bathroom sink whilst I get ready for work and loves to watch the water go down the drain.

She’s starting to climb a lot now (I think because she is more comfortable in her surroundings) and she’s figured out how to get to the kitchen bench and has taken some interest in the fish tank (luckily it is all enclosed and she can’t get anything!).  She’s becoming quite the acrobat and has a few favourite toys – I love nothing more than watching her play with a toy that I’ve put away for a week or so… It’s like a whole new toy to her!  She also likes to hide her toys behind my desk and will usually pick them up and run around the house with them in her mouth.

I’ve taken her to work today and she has spent most of the day in my office curled up in her cat bed and has been a hit here with the staff.  Everyone has remarked on how cute she is!

Kind regards,

Fleur

Hi Sue!

A little update on Ivanna and India (Saphira).

Both are doing fabulously well. Saphira loves her cuddles. If she is on a bench and someone comes up to pat her she will put her front two paws on you as if to say "Cuddle me, please!" (Of course, we oblige, she is simply too adorable).

Ivanna doesn't love being carried quite so much, but she loves curling up on laps. Ivanna has lovely goldie bronze eyes and is a little bigger than Saphira.

I have been taking them to Barwon Heads with me (from Melbourne) to visit my Mum, where they have more house space to run around. They are getting quite good with the trip. Initially there would be meows all the way, but now they mostly just go to sleep, knowing that it's quite fun at the other end of the journey!

Anyway, hope you and Mark are well! I have attached a couple of photos for you.

Cheers, Chrissy

Hi Sue and Mark,

We have been going to send you pictures of our babies but never get around to it. Just took these today and thought I would do it straight away.

Joey hasn’t lost any of his energy and goes not stop, loves to play fetch with pipe cleaners. It is unbelievable to see him and Samantha together, he follows her everywhere and does just about everything she says, it will be interesting to see how he goes on his own, Sam has moved out recently and Joey is going to live with her soon, he has been spending a couple of nights with her to help him settle in.

Gemma (Imogen) still has her moments with strange noises and people mostly she is just a loving cat and follows our Tonkinese around like she is her mum.

They all get on pretty well together and we bring them to San Remo just about every weekend, they love the car and don’t have any issues with having two homes.

Thanks,

Ray (Victoria)

Joey is a Blue-silver classic ocicat.

Gemma is a tawny spotted ocicat.

Hello Sue,

How are you? Well I hope,

We are all great, Kyan and Giz are 8 months old now and are growing into charming young boys. I can't believe i was so worried about them not taking to the children they have gone above and beyond my expectations. Kyan has adapted well to all the noise and no longer freaks out or runs away at the drop of a hat. He is so affectionate and can be quite pushy sometimes especially if i give some attention to Giz he gets very jealous. Gizmo is the children's cat as he has taken a special liking to my son Mohammed they love cuddling up together, he does not mind being picked up by the children at all  he is a very cuddly cat.
I also have been letting them go outside, they figured out how to pull the flyscreens off the windows and jump out! They are very smart!
They got a little taste of the outdoors and there was no going back they would sit at the back door and wine, and wine. I gave in!
It is nice to see how much they enjoy themselves outside chasing bugs and running around. Also they no longer go crazy running around the house at 2 o clock in the morning.
We just love them our family would not be the same without them.

Kind Regards,

Karimah (Victoria)

Hi Sue and Mark

Thought you might like to see how your two boys are getting on.  Pummi is now almost 10kgs with Arno around 8.5.  Both are BIG boys!

They now all sleep with us at night, but in the wee hours they get up to eat, drink, PLAY.  Having them race down the entire length of the hall to our bedroom and finish off by leaping onto the bed is a sight, sound, and above all a FEELING to behold!  THUMP!  THUMP! You almost cringe with anticipation of 10kgs and 8.5 kgs of animal leaping on to you.

With Pummi, it’s like having your own private Ocelot prowling around the house.  Both boys are incredibly good-natured, both with Petra, and with us.  I “wrestle” with Pummi often, and he seems to like it.  He is just such a big cuddly BEAR!!  And Arno is just cute and still impish all the time!

Hope you and Mark and your kitties are well!

All the best,

Don

Ocivalley Hidalgo, 'Harry' a Tawny spotted Ocicat.

Harry was adopted by Beryl and Trevor when he was 2 yrs old.

Hi Sue,

Just an update on Harry.  He is the most beautiful boy.  Going outside now on regular basis when we are home.  Brings in live lizards that have dropped their tails so often they only have their heads left.  Then Trev pinches them and puts them outside to live again.  Harry collects all the soft toys and takes them to his stations…His pole and a stash under the bed.  I pinch them back and arrange them on the bed and so the game goes on.  He sleeps with us now but he is thoughtful….doesn’t walk all over you at night and sleeps or plays quietly.  He is beautiful with the grandchildren. Sometimes 8 at a time.  He plays and follows them around.  He uses his box appropriately except once when he used the wood box.  Got that outside in a hurry.  I think it was like the chips in his dirt box.  That is my excuse anyway.  I growled at him and it has worked.

Harry can do no wrong and Trev and I are both loving him.  He is so affectionate.  Come and visit again when you and Mark get a moment.  He was so pleased to see you last time.  It is unreal that it is only about 4 weeks .  Thanks for all you have done for us …and especially letting us have your precious Harry.  He is the best.

Love Beryl and Trevor (Victoria)

Ocivalley Honey Bear and Huckleberry Finn.

E-mail from Rachel in Brisbane

Huck and Honey are doing fantastically, and each are 'one of the kids' here with us.
They've definitely grown to be very handsome boys (as you could imagine they would be LOL) and I see both their mum and their dad in each of them.  Honeybear is sleek like Goldie, and Huck is a big hulk of a boy like Kipper.  Honey is the alpha, and they hate being away from each other for anything more than ten minutes!  I know as soon as one is locked in a room by himself as they moan and cry about their solitude until they are found hahaha!  They are still indoors cats, as I'm too scared of a) losing them on the road, or b) them going on a killing rampage, they are so keen on anything that moves, and stare out the window at the birds and lizards outside.

Every night when I read stories to the kids before bed time, the boys come in and say goodnight to the kids.  They love the kids rooms and exploring and stealing their toys is one of their hobbies I'm sure.

One funny thing they do is jump up for cuddles.  Sick of waiting to be picked up, they miaow at your feet, thankfully to let you know they are on their way up, and when you tap your chest and say 'up', they jump up for cuddles and attention.  It's a great party trick.  I've taught the boys to sit, and they must sit before they get their meat at night, Honeybear is less obliging to being trained (maybe cuz he's the Alpha?), but still does what I'm asking him eventually lol but Huck is just so obedient..  The cats are so special and so loved, and I thank god for them every day!  I love our Ocicats so much :)
I've put photos on my facebook page of them, and the comments I get are fantastic.

Hi Sue

Just thought I would drop you a line of appreciation &
 update............

 Vita is jaw-droppingly clever,
affectionate, sure-footed, quick-as-a-whip, decisive & increasingly talkative.
Boy oh boy! She just doesn't miss a trick! She is blindingly
clever! She has distinct kleptomaniac tendencies - which can be
quite charming.
Also - if asked - I would say to never get an Ocicat unless they
have a 'buddy' (aka Dolce). Vita SO needs the rough & tumble of the other cat (& vice versa). Dolce (other cat) fills needs that I never could.

Cheers & thanks.............
Suzi

Letter from Sue and Enzo, South Australia

Dear  Sue and Mark

Just writing a short note to say hello and to let you know how our two beautiful cats are progressing. They are almost out of their lively kitten-stage and have really settled down well into our home routine.

They are now 19 months old and such cuddly cats, most of the time. … Abby spent many months attempting to leave on an adventure over our fences and now we have managed to finally ‘outwit’ her! We were nicknaming her ‘Roma’ as she persisted with every boundary fence until we ‘cat proofed’ them. Ollie was frantic whenever she left us. Luckily, it was not for long and she came to no harm except for Ollie’s ‘box around the ears’ when she finally turned up.

They still love brief walks on their leads nearly every day outside our home and love trying to get the pesky, swooping, noisy miners – with my encouragement! Abby especially is an expert catcher of crickets and dragonflies, which hover over the pool. She is very patient and extremely quick.

Ollie is very vocal and most intelligent and knows exactly what you are talking about. He can be a bit cheeky especially at meal times. A boy! He is also a very handsome boy, says his Mum.

They have brought a lot of joy into our household, remain very well and are pretty spoilt but us all and lots of the boy’s friends adore them too. You will be pleased to know that we still put them into the laundry (door closed) each night for bed. Sometimes they are in there before they are put there! They are very smart.

We are so glad we have our two wonderful cats in our lives. Thank you for that.

With kind regards from Sue, Enzo,

Ollie is tawny spotted

Hi Sue,

Hope you're well. Just thought we'd send you a few photos and an update of Kala & Angus.

Angus has been an amazing addition to the family and growing so quickly, almost the size of Kala now, and just loves his tummy rubbed. Such a perfect personality, wonderfully playful, loving and confident, and we've even taught him to fetch and retrieve (Kala has yet to progress pass the 'chase' stage unfortunately!). Angus has also become the resident bug catcher, making short work of any unsuspecting flies that wander indoors. They both regularly converse with the birds too.. one particular Indian myna never fails to hold their attention. Very bizarre to hear but very funny.

E-mail from Robyn in Tasmania

Hello Sue,

Sorry I have taken so long to send you some photo's of our baby, I have been very busy this week and when I haven't been
Hershey has had me pinned down so he can have all my attention.  He loves to sit on my chest and sing me a song,  lucky I'm well padded, bit hard to watch tele with him sitting there though  lol.

When he hasn't got mine or the boys attention Paul included, he has had fun chasing Kira all around the house, they woke my eldest up at 5am this morning little buggers, he thought he stay up and play his xbox until I caught him and told him to go back to sleep, apparently Hershey was washing his face for him, he HAD slept most of the night in my bed.
7 o'clock this morning he and Kira were chasing each other up and down the hallway in and out of the boys rooms, so much for telling them to have a sleep in, Hershey and Kira had other ideas.

He certainly is a little character, very persistent, after only two/three days he had worn Kira's resolve to hate him down.  Basically he pestered the sh## out of her until she gave in, very funny to watch, it really didn't take her long to give into him, to his constant play with me gestures.

Kira, tawny spotted ocicat female, went to live with Robyn and family in 2008. She has now been joined by Hershey, a tawny spotted ocicat male, in March 2009.

She  was hissing at him, growling at him and not letting him near the food bowl, vacating the chair when he came and sat on it, and generally being jealous and not prepared to share.
She will now curl up and sleep with him happily, groom him and now even lets him move her head out of the way of the food bowl, he certainly does enjoy his tucker.

E-mail from Jenny and Simon

Hi Sue,

Hope this letter finds you both well and settled into your new home .
Had a look at your web site the other day and it is looking great.
We are thoroughly enjoying Hannah and Tillie as members of our family
and they have settled in very well. They have each quite different
personalities and are very good mates as well as scrapping buddies.
Hannah has an amazing stamina for fetch and retrieve of her mouse and will quite happily play for ages or until we get tired.
She also has an amazing appetite. Tillie is more reserved, however she has amazing agility and can leap to incredible heights with out too much effort. Found her on top of the stacked washing machine/ dryer in the laundry the other day. Over 2 metres high.
They are highly intelligent and seem to be able to solve situations that any other cat would give up on.
They loved the footy on the big screen, in fact Tillie has become a
Collingwood supporter with her colouring and ball chasing skills
standing on her hind legs patting at the ball on the screen. Also good computer skills tapping away at the monitor with the cursor moving around.
There is a hot key we didn't know of but they found one to lock up the whole system .Tech support was needed to undo the key board typing mystery.

Hannah, is a tawny spotted ocicat and

Tillie is a blue-silver spotted ocicat.

E-mail from Elizabeth

Hi Sue,

I heard you were asking about your babies.

We are still having a lot of fun.

I think I must be feeding them too much because they have grown huge!

I think George would win a show for his good looks.  He is a magnificent looking cat.

Then there is Gemma....  She is a devil.  She raids our bread bin when she spies it left open and pinches the packet and drags it over to under the dining room table to share (but only when she has finished with it).  You should hear the growls on them when they have food and no-one else is allowed any.

You were right about them sitting on the one person.  I can't see the telli sometimes when they try to get on top (closest to my face).

The guys have just taken another couple of photos so I will send them through next without text. (You can see me in the background typing this note).

Lots of love and whiskers,

Elizabeth, and ocis George and Gemma

E-mail from Chloe in Melbourne

"....They always fight over my lap too. I try to put them both on my lap together, because Mylo is so small still so i can get them both on there but Link always moves his tail for the first few minutes so this causes Mylo to bite it, then Link cracks it after so long and jumps off my lap. Sometimes it works out and they sleep on my lap for a while together, i love it when they do that. That's what happened when i sat down to write this email, Link won the battle this time. He's on my lap and Mylo is sitting next to myself and the laptop. Once Mylo progresses into adulthood i think her and Link will be the best of mates. Anyway i'v attached a couple of photos for you. You can definitely see the love in these two! Thank you for a beautiful cat. I'm so glad its all worked out..."

I'm not a breeder, so I can be objective. Right?

Ocis are marvellous. My Mochie is such a mellow cat. Oh, he has his
moments when he races through the house at top speed, but I've never,
ever had a moment of worry about his temperament. He's very gentle
and loving.

Mochie lives with four dogs. Three very large ones, and a rascally
Jack Russell, who is about the same size as Mochie. They all get
along fine. It's very clear that they think of him as a member of
their pack. I've heard others say that Ocis are good for people who
like dogs because they're sort of dog-like. When someone comes to the
house, Mochie is right there with the dogs to say hi. He's very
inquisitive. He knows where I keep his favorite toy and he has no
qualms about opening the cabinet to get it. It's a big stick with a
long piece of fabric on it, and he picks it up like a dog would pick
up a stick, and trots off with it to wait for me to come and play.

I can heartily recommend Ocicats. But be prepared -- they're very
smart!
